We have a new Tellarknight! Is it good?

TellarknightVatlamyus-INOV-JP-OPTellarknights are old news. Shaddolls are old news. Qliphorts are old news. Infernoids are old news. Why are Tellarknights getting a card that’s Construct with a Darth Maul-like body made out of Tierra and Tierra looks like it’s made out of the same Qli robot materials? On the whole though, I don’t care about story. It doesn’t affect gameplay. I’m unsure of why people are getting so excited over cards coming out in November. Yugioh players seem to forget what is actually soon. The Movie Pack, Felgrand Structure Deck and The Dark Illusion are all July.

Okay, The Dark Illusion is August 5th, but that’s still three months sooner than Invasion of Venom. We don’t even know if Invasion of Venom is the English name. I bet you forgot about the Synchro Pendulum coming out because you’re too focused on the far future. I know we have translators and the internet to see what’s happening for the rest of the year, but it isn’t going to happen until the end of the year. Get excited about what’s coming soon. Unification would help product hype. Konami could announce a set for everyone and say it comes out August 5th, and have everyone be excited for that product. Not have half of their audience excited about what’s right around the corner for them, and the other half awaiting product that’s 4 to 5 months away when there is new stuff coming out this month.

Regardless, we’re looking at the new DARK Tellarknight Xyz. It’s a spooky TERRORknight because ‘r’s and ‘l’s sound the same in Japanese or something.

Tellarknight Constructierra
DARK Warrior/Xyz/Effect
Rank 4 ATK/2600 DEF/550
“2 Level 4 “tellarknight” monsters
All face-up monsters on the field become DARK. You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then discard 1 card; Special Summon from your Extra Deck, 1 LIGHT “tellarknight” Xyz Monster, by using this face-up card you control as the Xyz Material, also you cannot Xyz Summon for the rest of this turn. (This is treated as an Xyz Summon. Xyz Materials attached to this card also become Xyz Materials on the Summoned monster.) This effect can be activated during either player’s turn, if you have 7 or more “tellarknight” monsters with different names in your Graveyard.”

Because translations, this is called Knight of the Void, Vatlamyus or something. I don’t believe that name is coming to TCG. Remember Nephilim and Midrash? Don’t count on Vatlamyus sticking. We just need something to refer to it as for conversation until we have an official name, so I’m going to pull a Uranus and just try not to refer to it by name. But if you look closely, you’ll notice it’s kind of a centaur, like Ptolemaeus. And its stats are inverted. Neat flavor.

First off, it can only be made with two Tellarknights. Not more. Not less. Exactly two. Can’t make a 5-mat centaurconstruct. It’s pretty significant because I always want some 2-mat to make with Tellars that’s a Tellarknight. Skybridge and Altair make non-tellars sad. And then, this guy can attack. It also doesn’t have 550 ATK. Not that this matters in 2016, but 2600 beats over Ophion and Ophion beats over Stardust Dragon. It’s still important to remember exactly where 2600 lies. More than 2550 and less than 2700. Eradicator and Deck Devastation Virus might become relevant again one day. This is a legal tribute for both, barring any stat reductions.

Constructierra only has two effects. Two pretty simple effects. The first makes all monsters DARK. Yugioh Wikia has no tips, so I’ll suggest what I thought of. First, you can tribute your other monsters for Viruses. All three. Crush Card, Deck Devastation and Eradicator Epidemic. The other monster has to have the correct ATK, but it becomes DARK if our new Xyz isn’t negated. Genex Ally Duradark can destroy any face-up Attack Position monster your opponent controls because it and your opponent’s monsters are both DARK. Other Genex monsters care about matching attribute and Powercell and Crusher are two more that could be relevant but probably bad. The most relevant thought I had was that Gozen Match would basically say that neither player can summon non-DARK monsters. This includes all of those LIGHT attribute Tellarknights in your hand and your Extra Deck. Sucks to suck, but your opponent can’t either. The viruses are probably the most valid use of this effect. I’m unsure of if it treats all monsters as ALSO DARK or as ONLY DARK. With the current wording, only DARK. Face-down monsters still have other attributes for cards that care about tributing monsters, like the Spiritual Arts. Cards like Abyssmegalo can’t tribute another WATER because they’re DARK. It’s also possible it was mistranslated as all monsters and that it only changes your monsters or your opponent’s monsters. But as of late, effect translations have been accurate.

The next effect is an ignition effect because it doesn’t say “during either player’s turn” or state that it’s a quick effect. It can only be activated during your Main Phase when you’re in Box A of the flowchart. It has a lot of text, but you detach a material and discard a card, then use it as Xyz Material for any LIGHT Tellarknight. It allows you to make Delteros, Diamond and Triverr with any two Tellars and a card from hand. It seems Konami has learned their lesson about generic Rank 4s that put other Xyz on top as a quick effect. This isn’t generic and is usually an ignition effect. You need to do a lot of work for it to become a quick effect. Seven different names is a lot. I’ve seen games where Judgment Dragon never comes down and that’s only four.

Is this card a good card? Yes. Is the meta right for specifically this card? It could be. Are you going to Triverr on your opponent’s turn? Probably not. Are Tellars good? Not really. If this came out with Diamond, Triverr or Delteros it would have seen play. But unfortunately, I think this is just a story card.

Overall, not a bad card, but this isn’t going to push Tellarknights back into competition by itself. Maybe we’ll get more new things. Pick up Deneb while it’s low. Until tomorrow, click an ad and share this with your friends.
