Deck of the day: Toadally Awesome HEROs

elementalherobubbleman-sdhs-en-c-1eI’ve played all kinds of HERO decks for years and HEROs has stayed true to Fusion Summoning every time we get a new variant. There was Bubble Beat with Blade Armor and Excalibur back in 2012 and 2013 but the deck still used Miracle Fusions for Absolute Zero. And I used Mask Change for Acid and Vapor back before Shadow Mist was a thing. Invasion: Vengeance brought HEROs a new tool; Toadally Awesome. Don’t believe me? Bubbleman is a WATER, which means Bahamut Shark, which means Toadally Awesome! The best part of the deck is that it’s actually good! All aboard the Toadally Awesome HERO train! (we’re not playing trains)

maskedherodarklaw-sdhs-en-sr-1eThe main draws to this deck Dark Law and Toadally Awesome. Dark Law is old new by now but still can put turn on the heat for decks that rely on their Graveyard in any kind of way. Pendulums get banished with Dark Law’s effect applying. Pot of Desires is pretty commonplace now and Dark Law turns that into a “Banish 10; Draw two, exile one”, which makes it a much worse Allure of -Darkness- Desires. Toadally Awesome and a few Trap Cards backing it up are super annoying and hard to deal with without Kaijus. That’s how this deck wins.

When the HERO Strike structure deck came out, most people used nine monsters. Three Shadow Mist, three Bubbleman and three Goblindbergh. At the time, we had three RotA in addition to three E Call and three A Hero Lives but now we need to use Tin Goldfish over Goblindbergh if we want to consistently make Bahamut Shark to summon our Toad. The play you’re hoping to make on turn one is Tin Goldfish into Shadow Mist, search Mask Change, set two cards, Special Summon Bubbleman, make Shark, summon Treatoad and pass. Then, on their turn, Mask Change Shadow Mist into Dark Law to get your Shadow Mist search.

I’ve seen a few deck lists without Summoner Monk and I didn’t like them. Monk is just another way to make Xyz and summon Shadow Mist. You have more than enough Spell Cards to discard with it. Don’t worry about opening Goldfish and Monk because Goldfish can summon Monk. Key Beetle is something I had in the deck for a while before Toadally Awesome came out. You can include it if you’d like but I can’t find room for it.

ElderEntityNorden-CT12-EN-SR-LENorden may be limited but Instant Fusion is not. It really should be the other way around because I can still have three Instant Fusion in my deck and re-use Norden by either putting it back with Emeral or Toad, or using Spider Shark. Instant Fusion is really an instant Bahamut Shark plus Toad or any other Rank 4 you need. I wouldn’t suggest playing any less than three in a build with Monks. Rare Fish may or may not deserve a spot when it comes out.

Sometimes you don’t open Dark Law, Bahamut and Trap Cards. Sometimes you don’t have two WATER monsters and you need to use the Trap Cards in your Deck. That’s why I’ve included Rafflesia, and I’m not the only one. It’s not a genius secret tech, it’s just a good card. To go with Raff, we have one Bottomless, one Traptrix Nightmare and two Floodgates. Bottomless and Traptrix Nightmare are both good and generic answers to things that you wouldn’t be unhappy to draw and Floodgate puts things face-down, something incredibly undervalued as of late. Or not, because both of the two best decks at the moment are using at least two Book of Eclipse. Putting monsters face-down and not letting flip is super powerful, especially when your biggest monster is 2600 and ABC-Dragon Buster is 3000/2800. In the same vein, two Quaking Mirror Force is fairly standard and is better than Drowning because you
always want to have monsters. The next best option is probably Time-Space or Void Trap Hole.

Most of the lists I’ve seen that have topped events include two or three Pot of Desires and the number is really up to you. Resolving two in a game really shouldn’t happen because you’ll likely deck out but the third is something you can discard to Monk or Twin Twisters. If you do play the Desires, do all of your searching first, then play Desires to not banish all of your Mask Changes and Shadow Mists. You can replace these with Upstart and the third Twin Twister if you don’t have Desires. Solemn Strike can also be replaced with more Trap Holes, Breakthrough Skill or Book of Eclipse if you don’t want to spend the money on Strikes. Mask Charge is another option over Desires. I don’t like Hand Traps in this deck because they conflict really hard with Bubbleman. It’s the worst feeling to activate Maxx “C” on the first turn of the duel just to summon Bubbleman. Ghost Ogre would be a perfect fit if it wasn’t a hand trap, that’s why I have Typhoon in the Side Deck. If you think it’s best, you can play Maxx “C” in the Main Deck.

Number37HopeWovenDragonSpiderShark-PGL3-EN-GScR-1EBurning Abyss don’t see much play but Abyss Dweller is still really good. It stops the ABC monsters from doing their thing and gives all of your WATER monsters +500 ATK, which is crazy. Your Sharks are 3100 and Toad, 2700. That’s too strong. If you want to squeeze in Miracle Fusions, Absolute Zero is 3500 with just Abyss Dweller next to it. Spider Shark and the Lightning are how you deal with really big monsters. If you’re in Europe, add a second Bahamut Shark and either the third Toadally Awesome or Silent Honor ARK. If you do have access to the Lightning, your only flex slot is Emeral and if you don’t use Emeral, you use a second Bahamut Shark.

If you’re having a really hard time beating Toadally Awesome HEROs, Kaijus are the way to do it. There aren’t ways to prevent Kaijus from Tributing your monsters other than Emptiness. Gameciel can be boosted to 2700, so be careful there. If you’re playing Kaijus in the deck, Gameciel is the best because if you summon it, it’ll be 2700 and Dark Law can’t attack over Kumongous.

Toadally Awesome HEROs is really fun even though it’s sort of a helmet type of deck. It sucks to get Kaiju’d but it sucks to get Kaiju’d in any deck. Give it a try, other than Toad, Desires and Strike, the deck is relatively cheap and it still works without an optimal list.

Until Friday, click an ad, get Toadally Awesomes if you don’t have them and let me know what you think of the deck on…
