I’ve played more than my fair share of Herald builds and seen even more. I thought I found a build I liked until I looked around a little more and discovered just how good Benten is. Herald obviously needs a lot of fairies. I’ve played builds with Agents and Hyperion, builds with Spirits, builds with Advanced Ritual Art, builds with other janky fairies, builds with Star Seraphs. None have really felt right, even with Pre-Prep and Ritual Sanctuary. The hot tech I was looking for was Cyber Angel Benten. With the inclusion of Benten I’d be fairly happy taking Herald to any local tournament. I’d rather play Burning Abyss with Rhinos or Phantom Knights because Burning Abyss is just the best engine right now and combats everything. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with my build.
I’m not going to keep you waiting. I’ll just post the deck list here so you’ve seen it. Every deck list article I read, I scroll all the way down to the deck list, look at it, then I’ll read the article. If you’re just here only for the list, click an ad and thanks, see you Friday.

Most of this has become standard in a Herald deck so I’m not going to touch on Dawn, Pre-Prep or Ritual Sanctuary. Benten is the newest addition to the deck and fits perfectly with everything you want to do. No, you’re never going to summon it and you can’t, but you don’t need to. It’s Level 6 and when it’s tributed, you search for any LIGHT Fairy. Any one. Archlord Kristya, a Star Seraph, Herald of Perfection. Anything you want. It’s typically correct to search Archlord Kristya whether or not you can drop it that turn. That is unless you’ve gone way past like seven fairies. You can search any monster except Saffira or Maxx “C” so don’t think it’s wrong to search Manju, Freya, Honest or a Star Seraph. If I’m going to have zero fairies in my Graveyard but I have one Star Seraph, I’ll usually search the other. If I haven’t Normal Summoned yet, Freya is a good choice to throw down next to Herald.
There are two Saffira in the deck so I can naturally draw hands of Herald and Saffira more often. Three Saffira was too many only because I can’t discard her for Herald. Most people run one Hymn and one Saffira or three and three. I could see myself going down to one Saffira in the future because Dante and Blue-Eyes don’t care about the 2500 ATK. She can also trigger if your opponent dumps a LIGHT from hand or deck. I initially had three Kristya because you always want it. Often you don’t have enough fairies, maybe two. One from tributing for Saffira and one from your Stick->Chair->Chair combo. You can search it with Benten, too.
I’m not running any Cyber Angel Idaten but you can if you want. Cut Freya for Idaten. Idaten and Honest are the only ways to ensure Saffira lives in battle but Herald is supposed to stop everything, anyways. Manju is staple and Senju isn’t necessary with six Ritual Sanctuary and three Pre-Preparations. It also eats your Normal Summon. Freya is my answer to Blue-Eyes. Sometimes you naturally draw Freya and sometimes you search it with Benten. Sometimes you get lucky and don’t need to Normal Summon before you summon Herald and can plop down Freya next to it. Freya makes Herald and Kristya 3200 on their relevant stat. Both bigger than Blue-Eyes. It’s even Level 1 so you can put back a single spell with Ritual Sanctuary to revive it.
Summoner Monk is an iffy card. It’s great when you see it early, especially with a Sovereignty in your hand. It makes Metalfoes Fusion better, which is another card that doesn’t do anything. Summoner Monk is not a fairy and doesn’t do anything once you have a field, it doesn’t do anything. Metalfoes Fusion only cantrips when you are able to discard it with Ritual Sanctuary or Saffira. I don’t like Monk because it doesn’t do anything by itself. Metalfoes Fusion is the same. Instant Fusion is dead on the first turn, sometimes, but it at least does something.
Herald of Orange Light is a good card. Ghost Ogre and Veiler are too. They just don’t actively get you to Herald nor protect Herald nor provide an alternate win condition. Freya is similar to them but isn’t the type of card you want to open with going second. Maxx “C” also has the same problem of wanting it only when you go second and it’s not actively doing anything. Maxx “C”, unlike Orange Light, Veiler and Ghost Ogre, fuels Herald and tells your opponent to slow down. It also gives them a warning game one before they know what you’re playing. It’s too good of a card not to include without Monarchs. Blue-Eyes is the only match-up where it isn’t great.
Mystical Space Typhoon, Cosmic Cyclone and Twin Twisters are all great. They cause another problem in deck building. You don’t want to see them except when you need them. Cards that are answers are worse than cards that are threats. Maxx “C” is going to become a threat while MST isn’t. Sure, some of the time you’ll lose if they have a problem card game one that you can’t answer, like Emptiness. That’s where Honest and luck come in. I never said Herald was the best deck this format and sometimes you just need to get lucky.
Instant Fusion and Norden is usually an inclusion I forego in Rank 4 decks unless Norden is actually relevant. Ritual Sanctuary breaks Norden more than when Norden was unlimited. If both players have access to multiple Norden, that means your opponent has access to multiple Norden. Ritual Sanctuary can put back Instant Fusion if you Emeral Norden, but that’s just gravy. Ritual Sanctuary breaks Norden when you shuffle back four spells and Special Summon Norden. Even better if you have Sovereignty in your hand when you revive Scepter off of Norden and make a 3-material Rank 4. It really is a shame Shock Master and Ptolemaeus are forbidden. None of the other 3-mats are on the same power level. Rightfully so because Shock Master and Ptolemaeus are straight-up oppressive. Imagine Shock Master and Herald together. Please don’t quit Yugioh because you’re going to have nightmares about that.
Rhapsody, the second Emeral and Thousand-Eyes Restrict are all super flexible slots for more Rank 4s and 6s if you want. I like Number 10: Illumiknight and Bujinki Amaterasu. You could include the package of Utopia, Utopia Prime/Ray and the Lightning if you think top decking should mean you can attack for 5000. Utopia Prime or Ray is an important inclusion because Sovereignty can’t be used for plain old Utopia.
I’m not very happy with this Side Deck. It needs a lot of tuning. Siding with a deck like Herald is always difficult. You lose a lot of consistency. I like Victoria for Blue-Eyes but I put it in when Summoner Monk could grab it anytime. Lancea is for Kozmo, which really don’t see play. Kumongous is for pretty much everything. If there was a fairy one, I would main deck it. I think four is the correct number of spell/trap destruction. Raigeki doesn’t belong in the main deck. Dark Hole and Book of Eclipse aren’t always good but are answers to floodgate monsters. I like Swords of Concealing Light better. Let me know in the comments what your Side Deck would look like.
The deck is really fun. I’d be pretty confident taking it to a locals, but not anything bigger. The Burning Abyss match-up is very dependent on whether or not you can get Herald and/or Diamond set up. I kind of want Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror because your opponent can just go Chain Link 1 Farfa/Alich, Chain Link 2, anything else. Blue-Eyes just runs over Herald turn after turn unless you can get Kristya before they summon anything or you are able to summon Freya. Victoria helps a lot with muscle. Victoria has the added benefit of not allowing your opponent to attack your other fairies, which means two protect all of your fairies from battle. The Mermail, Lightsworn and all of the Pendulum match-ups are fine.
Again, the deck is really fun and I recommend trying it out. Herald is one of my favorite decks. The only problem is that it’s less than 50/50 against the best deck and about 50/50 against all of the Pendulum decks. I think Herald might be a real contender next format if Blue-Eyes and Burning Abyss are weakened and Herald doesn’t lose anything. It’s really good against garbage, though. Until Friday, click an ad and make sure you have secret Kristyas and Freyas and ghost Honests and Heralds.
