Cards of the day: Mega Thestalos and Frost Blast

Whether or not you’re playing Monarchs and whether or not the version being played has an extra deck, there are two cards you need to consider and/or watch out for if you’re playing Monarchs or against Monarchs. Those two cards are Frost Blast of the Monarchs and Thestalos the Mega Monarch. If you don’t know what they do, it’s time to read them.

Frost Blast of the Monarchs
Normal Spell
“If you control a monster with 2400 or more ATK and 1000 DEF: Target 1 Set card on the field; destroy it. You can banish this card and 1 “Monarch” Spell/Trap Card from your Graveyard, then target 1 Set card on the field; destroy it.”

Thestalos the Mega Monarch
Level 8 FIRE / Pyro
2800 ATK / 1000 DEF
“You can Tribute Summon this card by Tributing 1 Tribute Summoned monster. If this card is Tribute Summoned: Look at your opponent’s hand and discard 1 card from their hand, then, if it was a Monster Card, inflict damage to your opponent equal to its original Level x 200. If this card was Tribute Summoned by Tributing a FIRE monster, add this additional effect.
●Also, inflict 1000 damage to your opponent after that.”

Most people looked at Infinite Gold, looked at Frost Blast, laughed at how not good it is, then moved on. But now people have started to pick it up because Chaos Trap Hole is seeing play. You need to control a monster with Monarch stats to play Frost Blast, but not really. Outside of the obvious Monarchs there are plenty of monsters that allow you to activate Frost Blast, but none you’ll likely be playing.

FrostBlastoftheMonarchs-PGL3-EN-GScR-1ECards like Night Beam and Galaxy Cyclone have seen play, why not Frost Blast? All it requires is you to control a Monarch, which is obviously worse, but like Galaxy Cyclone, you can use it twice. The main cards you want to hit are Solemn Strike, Warning and Chaos Trap Hole to ensure your Monarchs’ effects go through, but all three of those will be activated before you can Frost Blast. Just banish it from the Graveyard. That doesn’t have any requirements.

Ehther and Erebus both dump Monarch Spell/Traps from the deck/hand to the Graveyard. So do Beatrice, Kuraz, Pantheism, Twin Twister and Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell. Quick side note, you can make Rank 6s easily by reducing the level of Ehther to 6 with Domain, then summon Kuraz from your deck, destroy the Prime Monarch and Frost Blast you set before summoning Ehther, draw two cards then make Beatrice and dump Frost Blast/Pantheism/Prime Monarch.

So if your opponent already has set backrow, you may want to be wary summoning anything into it, especially Ehther and Erebus. And if it is a Counter Trap, it’ll likely take out your Normal Summon for the turn, but dumping Frost Blast if you go first is a real option. And Twin Twisters and Pantheism is an option on your first turn going first or second.
Overall, a single copy of Frost Blast in the main deck is a solid choice and almost never dead. It’s not like it’s Strike of the Monarchs. I can’t wait to be proven wrong about Strike. The other card of the day is also a card that is starting to see play, partially because it gets around Chaos Trap Hole, but mainly because it’s Confiscation with some burn. And as the amount of play Upstart Goblin and Dian Keto the Cure Master see, it’s pretty much fact that a card is worth more than 1000 LP, especially when coupled with information of your opponent’s hand. Fengsheng Mirror lets you look at your opponent’s hand for free, but not really. You are down a card and you have to play Fengsheng Mirror, which means you can’t play another card in that slot. The burn isn’t nothing either. Thestalos isn’t going to burn if you make your opponent discard a Spell Card or Trap Card, but if you discard a Dark Destroyer, opposing Monarch or a Kaiju, that’s 1600 damage. If you tributed Red Layer, 2600. Even if you hit a Malebranche, 600 points of damage, one card out of their hand and knowledge of the rest of their hand is incredibly powerful. How many Thestalos you should run is not a fact, but you should be running some number.
