MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope you’re having a happy, stress-free Christmas. If you’re not, I hope it’s because you’re celebrating another holiday. Regardless, today’s card of the day has to be Santa Claws, there’s just not another card that fits as nicely as Santa Claws. Sure, there’s stuff like Space Gift, Gift Card, Token Sundae, Token Feastevil, and the one we missed, Token Thanksgiving.
Santa Claws is a Level 6 LIGHT Fiend monster with 1200 ATK and 2500 DEF. I don’t see many reasons why the Fiend or LIGHT stats would be relevant but Level 6 I’m sure will almost always be relevant. Santa Claws’ effect states that you can Special Summon it from your hand to your opponent’s side of the field in Defense Position by Tributing 1 monster they control. This effect does not start a chain, you just do it during your Main Phase when you have priority and you’re in Box A of the flowchart. The downside to Santa Claws is pretty minimal, your opponent gets to draw a card during the End Phase if Santa Claws is still face-up on their side of the field.
There are several ways to get around the downside. The easiest is to summon a monster with more than 2500 ATK and attack over it. There are definitely no shortage of strong monsters and if you didn’t have a way to kill Santa Claws, you wouldn’t include it in your deck. The other way to remove Santa Claws from the field is to simply remove it from the field. You have a couple options but something like Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin is one of the best options because that can repeatedly return Santa Claws to your hand to use again and again. And, of course, there’s the one-time removal like Dark Hole, Raigeki and the like. There’s always the option of flipping Santa Claws face-down with cards like Book of Eclipse and Book of Moon, which are basically always good cards. And your last option is to take control of your Santa Claws again so you can get the draw. There are some amount of ways to do this, Big Eye, Remove Brainwashing, and more, but the best plan is just to kill the Santa Claws.
There are other cards like Santa Claws – Lava Golem which burns them for 1000 and tributes two monsters but has 3000 ATK to beat you down with. Then there are all the Kaijus that just tribute one monster and have varying ATKs and DEFs from 2200 ATK to 3300 ATK and have the added benefit of being able to Special Summon themselves to your field if your opponent has a Kaiju.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
