I only played casually in 2007, but I do remember buying a few of the Ancient Gear structure deck because Ancient Gear Golem is cool as heck, and in that structure deck was a series of monsters that made my newly constructed “Ancient Gear Deck” better than my friend’s Elemental HERO deck. Those monsters were Green Gadget, Red Gadget and Yellow Gadget. Cards like Torrential Tribute, Mirror Force and Dark Hole didn’t mean anything to my Gadgets because I always had more Gadgets to summon, and when I drew Ultimate Offering with a Gadjiltron Dragon or Ancient Gear Golem, the was pretty much over in like 5 more turns. Oh, to not know what meta is.
Gadgets over the years have seen varying success over the years to their constant +1s and one for one card trading that leaves them ahead of their opponent due to the plusses of the Gadgets. Machina Fortress and Machina Gearframe were in the next machine structure deck, which gave birth to Machina Gadgets. Xyz came out in 2011 and Gadgets became a decent Rank 4 engine due to the fact that unlike Reborn Tengu and Sangan, the Gadgets didn’t need to be sent from field to the grave to float. Rank 4s were not the best at first, but Shock Master soon came out and Ultimate Offering meant triple Shock Master.
When Gear Gigant X came out, Gadgets had an Xyz that searched for more Gadgets. Hooray. However, Geargia largely overshadowed Gadgets mostly due to Geargiaccelerator making the deck significantly faster. But then, in 2013 Gadgets got a lot of new tools, mostly in LTGY. Previously you had to hard draw Kagetokage if you were even playing it and Machina Fortress was the only big guy. Gadgets could also invest two Fortress into Big Eye, but that was super costly and could cost the whole game if it fell into something like Bottomless or an Evacuation Device. Just take a moment to appreciate how Redox and Tin Goldfish changed Gadgets.
Tin Goldfish allows for turn 1 Gear Gigant X and is a machine for GGX to search. Redox pairs with Machina Fortress for easier, less costly Rank 7s and even though Redox is the weakest Dragon Ruler, it has more ATK than any of the Gadgets and 1600 over a couple of turns really adds up. Also 3000 booty is pretty good. King Imps lets you search Kagetokage to make more Rank 4s. Dracossack is another generic Rank 7 that we can make pretty easily due to Redox. The strategy wasn’t complex, but it was effective. Yes, it lost when your opponent had double Rejuv or Jowgen + legitimate backrow, but you could Shock Master them out of the game and out grind anything not Dragons or Books.
Unfortunately, that had to end. In 2016, today, Redox is forbidden. Exciton Knight and Lavalval Chain, also forbidden. Shock Master, forbidden. But in a few days Japan gets two new Gadgets and rumor has it that we will get them in July. Gold and Silver Gadget.
Both Gold and Silver Gadget when they’re Normal or Special Summoned let you Special Summon another Level 4 Machine from your hand and when they’re destroyed, Special Summon a Gadget from your deck, except another copy. Both also have the Dragon Ruler clause of only one effect per turn and only once that turn. But these easily replace Tin Goldfish because they have more ATK and can summon Gadgets from the deck should they die. It’s unlikely that they will because you make Xyz, but Call of the Haunted stuff happens sometimes.
So while Gold and Silver might be the focus right now, it’s Red, Green and Yellow that hold the deck together. But before you go buy those holo Gadgets, click an ad and look at my list of things to consider when building your Gadget deck.
