A,B,C, easy as 1,2,3

XYZDragonCannon-JP-Anime-DM-NCToday isn’t card of the day, it’s archetype of the day. Okay, not a true archetype because they don’t share a naming convention, but it’s the AtoZ group. In late 2003, we got X, Y, Z, XY, XZ, YZ and XYZ. They’re a series of LIGHT Machine-Type monsters. X is a Normal Monster, Y and Z are unions, and the combinations are the Fusion Monsters that don’t require Polymerization. Instead you banish the materials that you control. Then in 2005, we got V, W, VW and VWXYZ. Now, a few days ago, Japan got A, B, C and ABC. ABC series is way better than VWXYZ.

So we know about X, Y and Z, and they’re bad and hard to use. But A, B, C is as easy as 1, 2, 3. The three new monsters are all Unions, like W, Y and Z. However, they can equip themselves to any LIGHT Machine-Type monster. They also lack the text that says a monster can only be equipped with one Union at a time, so provided there isn’t a Union with that text already equipped, A, B and C can all be equipped to the same monster. Supposedly Y and Z also lack this text now, but they still have it in the TCG. These are OCG cards. If only the two games would unite. Let’s check out the cards with their translated text. I don’t know Japanese, so I have to assume these are correct. Names may not be the same if/when these are printed in English.

AAssaultCore-SDKS-JP-SRA-Assault Core
Level 4 LIGHT Machine/Union/Effect
1900 ATK / 200 DEF
“Once per turn, you can either: Target 1 LIGHT Machine-Type monster you control; equip this card to that target, OR: Unequip this card and Special Summon it. The equipped monster is unaffected by your opponent’s monster effects. (If the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle or card effect, destroy this card instead.) If this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can add 1 other Union monster from your Graveyard to your hand.”

BBusterDrake-SDKS-JP-SRB-Buster Drake
Level 4 LIGHT Machine/Union/Effect
1500 ATK / 1800 DEF
“Once per turn, you can either: Target 1 LIGHT Machine-Type monster you control; equip this card to that target, OR: Unequip this card and Special Summon it. The equipped monster is unaffected by your opponent’s Spell effects. (If the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle or card effect, destroy this card instead.) If this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can add 1 Union monster from your Deck to your hand.”

CCrushWyvern-SDKS-JP-SRC-Crusher Wyvern
Level 4 LIGHT Machine/Union/Effect
1200 ATK / 2000 DEF
“Once per turn, you can either: Target 1 LIGHT Machine-Type monster you control; equip this card to that target, OR: Unequip this card and Special Summon it. The equipped monster is unaffected by your opponent’s Trap effects. (If the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle or card effect, destroy this card instead.) If this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 Union monster from your hand.”

It seems that many Yugioh players don’t read, so I’ll summarize their effects.
-Typical Union, but can SS themselves in Defense Position as well
-Can be multiple of new Unions equipped at the same time
-Can Union onto any LIGHT Machine-Type you control
-The equipped monster is unaffected by opponent’s
A: Monster effects
B: Spell effects
C: Trap effects
-If sent from field to Graveyard: You can
A: Add back any Union from your Graveyard
B: Search any Union
C: Special Summon any Union from your hand

The series also received two new Fusions. ABC-Dragon Buster, and AtoZ Dragon Buster Cannon.

ABCDragonBuster-SDKS-JP-URABC-Dragon Buster
Level 8 LIGHT Machine/Fusion/Effect
3000 ATK / 2800 DEF
“”A-Assault Core” + “B-Buster Drake” + “C-Crush Wyvern”
Must first be Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by banishing the above cards you control or in your Graveyard. (You do not use “Polymerization”.) Once per turn, during either player’s turn: You can discard 1 card, then target 1 card on the field; banish it. During your opponent’s turn: You can Tribute this card, then target 3 of your banished LIGHT Machine-Type Union monsters with different names; Special Summon them (this is a Quick Effect).”

You can summon it by banishing the materials from your Graveyard, which makes it better than XYZ-Dragon Cannon. Its other effect also mirrors XYZ-Dragon Cannon. Both discard to get rid of a card, but ABC-Dragon Buster banishes the target and is a quick effect, but it’s once per turn. XYZ-Dragon Cannon is an ignition effect and destroys it, but can be used as many times as you can discard. ABC-Dragon Buster can also Tribute itself to Special Summon any 3 banished LIGHT Machine Unions with different names. Only on the opponent’s turn, though. The only monsters you can summon that you’d want to are part of the AtoZ series, with the exception of X-Head Cannon and V-Tiger Jet. Maybe the new Heavy Mech.

As of now, there is no AB, AC or BC, but we do have AtoZ Dragon Buster Cannon. It’s the fusion of ABC-Dragon Buster and XYZ-Dragon Cannon. No VW. Thank goodness whoever is in charge of these retrains didn’t let any VW stuff come through.

AtoZDragonBusterCannon-SDKS-JP-URAtoZ Dragon Buster Cannon
Level 10 LIGHT Machine/Fusion/Effect
4000 ATK / 4000 DEF
“”ABC-Dragon Buster” + “XYZ-Dragon Cannon”
Must be Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by banishing cards you control whose original names are the above cards, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. (You do not use “Polymerization”.) During either player’s turn, when your opponent activates a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect: You can discard 1 card; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card. During either player’s turn: You can banish this card, then target 1 “ABC-Dragon Buster” and “XYZ-Dragon Cannon” among your banished cards; Special Summon them.”

You can’t summon this guy by banishing from your Graveyard, what a shame. But it is Herald of Perfection that can discard anything. And it is 4000 over 4000. Very few things are going to attack over it. And if it’s about to be destroyed, just banish it and summon your ABC and XYZ from your banished pile. This card doesn’t make running XYZ worth the effort, but it does casually. If you really want, there are plenty of ways to get to XYZ + ABC, like Brilliant Fusion and Ties of Bretheren. That last effect is a quick effect, and you can summon them in Attack Position during your own Battle Phase. ABC has to split on the opponent’s turn.

4000 + 3000 + 2800 = 9800

The Field Spell really ties together the new monsters. Just give it a read. It equips Unions from your deck. It’s pretty good.

UnionHangar-SDKS-JP-NPRUnion Hangar
Field Spell
“When this card is activated: You can add 1 LIGHT Machine-Type Union monster from your Deck to your hand. Once per turn, if a LIGHT Machine-Type Union monster(s) is Normal or Special Summoned to your field (except during the Damage Step): You can target 1 of those monsters;equip from your Deck to that monster 1 appropriate LIGHT Machine-Type Union monster with a different name from that monster, but that Union monster cannot be Special Summoned this turn. You can only activate 1 “Union Hangar” per turn.”

Scramble Union is a free Return from the Different Dimension for 3 LIGHT Machine Normal/Unions. It’s decent. It can summon them in Attack Position for a little more damage, or to make another big Fusion. Then later, you can add back any banished LIGHT Machine Normal/Union. It’s not great in multiples, but it’s a good card and will definitely be winning a lot of casual games.

ScrambleUnion-SDKS-JP-NPRScramble Union
Normal Trap
“Target up to 3 of your banished LIGHT Machine-Type Normal and/or Union monsters; Special Summon them. During either player’s turn, except the turn this card was sent to the Graveyard: You can banish this card from your Graveyard, then target 1 of your banished LIGHT Machine-Type Normal or Union monsters; add it to your hand. You can only activate 1 “Scramble Union” per turn.”

Heavy Mech Support Armor isn’t part of the theme, but it’s a LIGHT Machine Union. It’s the retrain of Heavy Mech Support Platform and is basically just to equip more unions to your ABC. It’s not bad, but being Level 3 makes it undesirable.

HeavyMechSupportArmor-SDKS-JP-NPRHeavy Mech Support Armor
Level 3 LIGHT Machine/Union/Effect
500 ATK / 500 DEF
“When this card is Normal Summoned: You can target 1 Union monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. Once per turn, you can either: Target 1 Machine-Type monster you control; equip this card to that target, OR:Unequip this card and Special Summon it. The equipped monster cannot be targeted by your opponent’s card effects. (If the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle or card effect, destroy this card instead.)”

Right now people in Japan are running Cockadoodledoo to make Ancient Fairy Dragon and Scrap Dragon. Some are also running Transmodify and Galaxy Soldier to make Infinity, but I’m skeptical on how competitive the deck is. Maybe it’s good, maybe not. It’s really good for a casual deck, though. It’s super fun with Gold and Silver Gadget. I just make Diamond Dire and Castel and don’t care if they fall into Bottomless or Strike because their job was to trade for any of my opponent’s cards before I summon ABC-Dragon Buster. Perhaps it’ll be good, maybe not.

ABC
This list is far from optimal/budget

  1. The Hanger is the best. It’s a +2 on the turn you activate it as long as you keep the right kinds of unions in your deck. (and +1 each turn as long as you can summon a right kind of union)

Pity that old busted unions can randomly cause you to lose unions if you have double or triple equipped a monster with the new hotness.

Also, now that you can double equip union, it’s pretty clear why most destroy replacement effects are optional. (Yu-Gi-Oh applying all replacements at once results in this)

    1. If you have the new unions equipped, you can NOT equip an old union. If an old union is equipped, you can NOT equip any other union.

      1. That makes sense.

But what happens when Oilman (which has the text that only one monster can be equipped by a Union at a time) is summoned and a player has equipped B and C to something.
